破坏性放电是绝缘在电场应力下失效的现象，放电完全桥接被试绝缘，使电极间电压降至接近零。适用于固体、液体、气体电介质及其组合的电击穿，根据介质不同分为：气体或液体中的“火花间隙（sparkover）”；部分沿固体表面发生的“闪络（flashover）”；固体内部并造成永久性损坏的“击穿（puncture）”。
