热电动势是两种不同金属在温差作用下产生的电势差，是热电偶测温的基本物理量。当热电偶两端温度不同时，会在回路中产生电压，通过测量该电压即可确定温差。该效应也是温度测量中的误差源，可通过电流反向或交流电等方法进行校正。
