甲基橙是一种酸碱指示剂（二甲基氨基偶氮苯对磺酸钠），在pH约3~4范围内与十八烷基胺反应生成可溶于有机溶剂的黄色络合物，用于测定总碱度，滴定终点颜色由黄色变为橙色。也可用于氯气测定，通过分光光度法测量其褪色程度确定氯含量。
