总气态汞是元素气态汞（Hg0）和反应性挥发性汞化合物的总和，即具有足够高蒸气压以气态形式存在的水溶性汞化合物。它等于存在于气体样品中的元素汞及氧化汞（Hg2+）在气相中的总和，包括元素态、无机和有机汞的所有气态形态汞。
