外套是一种应用于绝缘层表面的覆盖形式，通常与jacketing互换使用。它可由聚酯等合成材料制成，提供抗内外压力、抗地面移动所需的拉伸强度和柔韧性。外套也可以是包裹在绝缘层外部的金属保护层，作为货箱的主要结构部件，用于支撑绝缘层免受湿气侵入并承受外部载荷。此外，外套还可用于固定气囊及穿着固定的骨架构件，表面需有反光带，用于保护气囊并提供穿着支撑。圆形无缝编织增强层，即圆形编织无缝增强层，也属于外套的一种形式。
